Overview

What this drink is like

The first sip hits with the sharp bite of carbonation and the clean, slightly medicinal warmth of vodka. There is no sweetness or fruit to hide behind, just a dry, watery middle that washes over the tongue. It finishes clean and fast, leaving only the scent of lime and a faint alcohol warmth.

Who will like it

For people who like extremely dry, no-sugar drinks where the spirit is front and center.

When to drink

Order this on a hot afternoon or at a crowded bar when you want something light that won't slow you down.

Ordering tip

Specify your vodka brand if you have a preference, and always ask for a lime wedge to squeeze in, otherwise it's just boozy water.

Flavor

Taste profile

This is a bare-bones drink that tastes exactly like what it is: cold, fizzy water with a stiff pour of clear alcohol. There is no sugar to round the edges, no citrus to balance, and no hidden depth. It is sharp, dry, and incredibly wet, hitting the palate with carbonation and leaving fast. The only real flavor comes from the vodka itself and whatever squeeze of lime you add.

Finish: The finish is short and dry, leaving a faint alcohol warmth and the lingering scent of lime.

Before you start

Make sure your club soda is well chilled and your glass is cold if you have room in the freezer.

Garnish: Lime wedge

Tools

  • Highball glass · Serving

To hold the drink and ice

    At home: Any tall glass

  • Jigger · Measuring

    To measure the vodka

At home: Shot glass or measuring spoon

  • Bar spoon · Mixing

To stir gently without killing the fizz

At home: Long spoon or chopstick

Steps

  1. 1

Fill a highball glass to the top with ice cubes. You want a lot of ice so the drink stays cold without melting too fast.

!Using too little ice makes the drink warm and watery quickly.

  2. 2

Pour 50ml of vodka directly over the ice. Let it settle to the bottom of the glass.

!Pouring the vodka after the soda makes it harder to mix without stirring aggressively.

  3. 3

Top the glass up with about 100ml of chilled club soda, pouring it gently down the side of the glass to keep as much fizz as possible.

!Pouring the soda too aggressively knocks the carbonation out.

  4. 4

Take a bar spoon and give the drink one or two gentle lifts from the bottom to mix the vodka and soda. Stop before you stir it vigorously, or you will flatten the drink.

!Stirring too fast ruins the carbonation.

  5. 5

Squeeze a lime wedge over the top of the drink and drop it in. The citrus oils and a few drops of juice give the drink a much-needed aroma.

!Forgetting the lime leaves the drink smelling like nothing but ethanol.

Serve

Serve it right away while the soda is still highly carbonated and the glass is frosty.

What works at home and what to skip when making this drink.

Tips

Worth knowing before you pour

  • Use a good quality vodka since there is nothing to hide behind.
  • Keep the soda in the fridge so it stays fizzy longer.
  • Squeeze the lime directly into the drink for a brighter taste.

Avoid

Common mistakes

  • Using cheap vodka will make it taste harsh and medicinal.
  • Stirring too aggressively will flatten the soda instantly.
  • Using warm soda makes the drink taste flat and watery.
